Peanut Allergies- When to seek medical advice?
By Aram
An estimate says close to 3 millions of American population is allergic
to peanuts. Therefore an understanding of the symptoms and causes of
peanut allergies can save a person’s life especially if he/she is
severely allergic and goes to anaphylaxis. In short, if you experience
any of the allergic symptoms after consuming peanut-based food, seek a
medical consultation.
As soon as you experience peanut allergy symptoms, first action is to
consult your medical practitioner for immediate attention. If a person
is mildly allergic symptoms such as itching or skin rash may surface,
but in case of an extremely sensitive individual severe reactions such
as intense trouble in breathing and shortness in breath, feeling of
tightness in throat, or becoming dizzy or unconscious are common. In
such cases a dose of epinephrine auto injector should be administered
immediately. But a sudden anaphylactic attack can be very dangerous and
can often prove fatal. Since there is should be any margin left to
error, seeking a medical advice and/or treatment becomes inevitable when
a person experiences peanut allergy symptoms.
Food allergies in most cases are ignored as they are thought to be
gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps
and so on. But, as soon as allergy occurs in the form of either hives or
asthma, it should never be ignored. As peanut allergy causing hives can
at time become very dangerous and finally affects the lungs and in turn
can trigger asthma. These attacks can become severe and often prove to
be fatal, if immediate medical attention is not sought.
The other reason to seek medical intervention immediately is to reverse
the allergic reaction and avoid cases of misdiagnosis as well which
happen often times. As the symptoms of peanut allergy surfaces, soon
after taking peanuts either directly or indirectly, consultation with a
medical practitioner is the most preferred choice to arrest further
advancement of symptoms and deterioration of health. |
