Risk Factors Associated With Peanut Allergies

By Aram

Allergy can get triggered with anybody and there is no definite cause as to why some are more likely to get affected by this disease and others not. Risk factors tend to increase the chances of getting this allergy. However, absence of risk factors does not guard us completely against getting this disease. With the increase in the prevalence of peanut allergy it has been found that family history of peanut allergy and conditions of past allergic tendency can be major risk factors.

If you have a family history of allergic reactions, the chances of you getting inherited the same allergic reactions is very high. It is genetic factors, in most cases that show a strong positive correlation and greater influence on this peanut allergy.

Individuals suffering from past allergic condition might be able to overgrow it for time being, but remember there exists an inherent tendency to recur anytime.

Other factor includes altered immune system of our body. Several studies suggest that killing germs of diseases in certain cases lead to alteration of our body immune system and it becomes prone to developing allergy.

During young age it is the male child that is more prone for allergic reactions, but during adolescence females are more prone to peanut allergies (although it should be noted that it is based on a study and not clinically analyzed).

Intake of soy-based products as well usage of peanut-based oil for treating atopic dermatitis are some other risk factors associated with peanut allergy.

Additionally, it has been found that it is the urban, metropolitan living population that is more likely to get affected by this disease rather than children growing up in rural areas. The Hygiene hypothesis proposes that if children at an early age are exposed to many allergy-causing substances, they generally tend to develop the immune system to fight against disease. However, in case when the children are growing up in extremely hygienic condition, they tend to become victims of these kind of allergic diseases.
